Booking your first motorcycle lesson should feel like a clear next step, not a collection of unfamiliar abbreviations. Initial Basic Training—IBT—is the structured training part of learning to ride in Ireland. Theory revision prepares your knowledge; IBT gives you supervised time to turn that knowledge into practical skills. This guide explains the distinction and helps you ask better questions before you pay for a course.

What is IBT, and how long does it take?

The RSA describes IBT as mandatory basic training for learner motorcyclists. Its published first-time routes are:

First-time IBT routes published by the RSA
CategoryCourse hoursModules
AM or A116 hours1, 2, 3 and 4
A2 or A18 hours1, 3 and 5

Training must be with a currently RSA-approved IBT instructor at an approved centre. Previous experience and progressive-access routes can change the training you need, so confirm your route before booking. Source: RSA motorcycle lessons and IBT.

Do not choose a course only by the number of days in an advertisement. Ask how teaching hours, breaks, travel and any extra tuition are arranged. A two-day label alone does not explain the full timetable or the support available if you need more practice.

What will you learn?

The RSA IBT syllabus moves from preparation and basic control towards road riding. Module 1 introduces equipment, the motorcycle and basic checks; Module 2 develops control in a training area; Module 3 covers road knowledge and risk; Module 4 takes those skills onto the road. Module 5 supports the larger-motorcycle and progression routes.

Use the course as a place to ask questions, particularly when something feels different from your car-driving experience. Tell the instructor early if a control is uncomfortable, an explanation is unclear or you are becoming tired. Repeating a demonstration with feedback is more useful than pretending you understood it.

How to choose an instructor and compare costs

Start with the RSA register of approved IBT instructors. Check the instructor and location directly. The RSA does not set one standard IBT price: instructors set their own fees. RSA guidance on choosing an instructor.

Request a written quote from more than one provider using the same questions. That makes the comparison about what you receive, rather than the headline price.

  • Which category and modules does the quote cover?
  • Are motorcycle hire, fuel and the training insurance arrangements included?
  • Is protective equipment available in my size, and what must I bring?
  • How many learners will train together, and how is individual feedback given?
  • What does extra tuition cost if I need it?
  • What happens if weather or illness changes the booking?
  • Which payments are refundable, and when is the balance due?

A cheaper quote may still suit you; an expensive one is not automatically better. Look for clear answers, suitable equipment and a timetable you can realistically attend. Keep the booking confirmation and agreed terms together.

Before your first day: a practical checklist

Ask your instructor to confirm the documents and equipment required for your booking. Do this before travelling, especially if you are using your own motorcycle or borrowing protective gear.

Your preparation list
  • Confirm your category and learner-permit details with the instructor.
  • Check the meeting point and whether any sessions use another location.
  • Try on supplied equipment in advance if possible.
  • Ask about suitable clothing for changing Irish weather.
  • Pack water, food and any personal items you need for a long day.
  • Arrange travel home without assuming you will ride away after the course.

Get a normal night’s sleep and leave a margin for travel. If you are nervous, tell the instructor rather than trying to conceal it. Write down two or three questions you want answered; it is easy to forget them once the practical session begins.

After IBT: records, practice and the driving test

The instructor records completed training and issues a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion. RSA completion guidance. Keep your records somewhere you can find them and check names, category and dates before leaving.

For the practical test, the RSA requires a valid permit for the category and an in-date IBT certificate for the motorcycle category being tested. First-time car and motorcycle permit holders are generally subject to the six-month rule. Use the RSA eligibility checker for your circumstances.

Completing a course does not mean every situation will immediately feel easy. Ask for a practice plan: which skills need attention, when another lesson would help and how to review progress. Keep theory revision going alongside practical learning. Use our motorcycle theory study guide to structure that revision.

A short message you can send to an instructor

I am preparing for my first IBT course. My intended motorcycle category is ____. Could you confirm the modules I need, your current approval, the total price, what equipment and motorcycle provision are included, the timetable, and the cost of any additional training? Please also tell me what documents to bring and your cancellation terms.

Fill in your own circumstances before sending. Do not send identity documents to an unfamiliar contact simply to obtain a price. First confirm you are speaking to the provider you intended to contact.

Common questions

Is IBT the same as the motorcycle theory test?

No. The theory test assesses knowledge; IBT is instructor-led training. Plan for both stages and check the route for your licence category.

Is there one fixed IBT price?

No. The RSA says instructors set their own fees. Compare the total package and ask about equipment, motorcycle provision and extra tuition.

Can a study app replace IBT?

No. Use an app to revise knowledge alongside training with an approved instructor.

Do I need the full course when moving up a category?

It depends on your existing licence and training history. Confirm the progressive-access route with the RSA and an approved IBT instructor before purchasing a course.
